Hotel Athlete Hotel Gym Standards
HOW WE EVALUATE HOTEL FITNESS CENTER EQUIPMENT
Not all hotel gyms are created equal.
Instead of generic star ratings, we evaluate gyms based on specific training capacity — so you can quickly determine whether a hotel supports your current plan.
Our system includes:
-
Strength Levels (load capacity)
-
Cardio Tiers (conditioning quality)
- Strength Support Tiers (strength infrastructure)
-
Functional Training Tiers (movement versatility)
Clear. Specific. Repeatable.
Strength Levels
Load Capacity & Progressive Training
Strength Levels are determined by the heaviest dumbbells available and whether barbell access is present.
If strength training matters to you, this is your primary filter.
Strength Level Breakdown
Level 1
No dumbbells available
Level 2
Dumbbells under 25 lb
Level 3
25–45 lb dumbbells
Level 4
50–70 lb dumbbells
Level 5
75 lb dumbbells
Level 6
80–100 lb dumbbells
Level 7
Barbell with free weights
How to Use Strength Levels
-
If you are maintaining or deloading, Level 3–4 may be sufficient.
-
If you require heavier loading, look for Level 5 or above.
-
If barbell work is essential, Level 7 is your starting point.
The goal is not “higher is better.”
The goal is alignment with your training phase.
Conditioning Tiers
Conditioning Quality & Variety
Conditioning Tiers reflect the quality and versatility of conditioning equipment.
Conditioning Tier Breakdown
Tier 1
Standard treadmill, elliptical, or bike
Tier 2
Spin bike or Peloton included
Tier 3
Row machine and/or air/Assault bike included
Tier 4
Self-powered treadmill or performance-grade conditioning equipment (weight sled, battle ropes, rope pulley)
How to Use Conditioning Tiers
-
Tier 1 is sufficient for light aerobic work.
-
Tier 2 supports structured cycling sessions.
-
Tier 3 expands full-body conditioning options.
-
Tier 4 supports high-performance conditioning and sprint work.
Choose based on your conditioning goals — not a generalized score.
Strength Support Tiers
Strength Options Beyond Dumbbells
Strength Support Tiers highlight equipment that expands your strength training options beyond dumbbells.
While Strength Levels measure load capacity, Strength Support reflects exercise variety and movement options that help you maintain balanced training while traveling.
Strength Support Tier Breakdown
Tier 1
Resistance bands, tube bands, and/or kettlebells
Tier 2
Cable crossover
Tier 3
Selectorized, cable weight machines (other than crossover)
Tier 4
Smith Machine
How to Use Strength Support Tiers
Strength Support Tiers help answer an important question:
If the dumbbells aren’t heavy enough, are there other ways to load movements?
Examples:
-
Cable machines allow rows, presses, and pulldowns
-
Smith machines enable heavier compound lifts
-
Resistance bands support accessory and mobility work
-
Full machine circuits allow complete strength sessions
These tools can significantly expand training possibilities even when dumbbell weight is limited.
Functional Training Tiers
Athletic Space & Movement Tools
Functional Tiers reflect the versatility of the space and equipment available for athletic movement.
Functional Tier Breakdown
Tier 1
Stability / balance ball, BOSU ball, medicine / slam balls
Tier 2
Pullup bar, TRX
Tier 3
Plyometric box, agility tools (such as agility ladder or hurdles)
Tier 4
Multi-use performance layout with open movement space (turf, dedicated training zone)
How to Use Functional Tiers
If your training includes:
-
Explosive movement
-
Unilateral strength work
-
Athletic drills
-
Mobility circuits
Functional Tier becomes an important filter.
Why We Don’t Use Star Ratings
A single score cannot reflect the needs of different training phases.
A runner, a strength-focused traveler, and someone in a recovery week prioritize different equipment.
Our system focuses on alignment over generalization.
Because “good” is subjective.
Capacity is measurable.
How We Verify Equipment
Accuracy matters.
Equipment listings are confirmed through:
-
Direct communication with hotels
-
Traveler-submitted verification
-
Manual review prior to publication
We prioritize reliable equipment detail over volume.
When training matters, precision matters.
How to Apply This System
Before booking your next hotel, ask:
-
What am I training this trip?
-
What equipment is non-negotiable?
-
What did I wish I had access to last time?
Then filter accordingly.
Strength.
Cardio.
Functional.
Choose intentionally.
Train deliberately.
PROF
For travelers using the PROF framework:
Perform — Train with intention
Reflect — Identify equipment gaps
Optimize — Book accordingly
Fuel — Match environment to energy
Your environment should support your plan — not limit it.
